Monday Munchies: Beef and Brew

Sticking with Geneva restaurants, Ang and I came across Beef and Brew on our way to Belhurst Castle and thought the name was too perfect to pass up. Inside was warm and inviting, the bar stretching out to your right as you walk in and cute little booths with curtains on your left. I was secretly hoping we'd get one of those booths, but we were taken into another room instead and sat at a normal person table. I have a feeling you need a reservation for those as it only looked like there was two or so of them and the restaurant filled up pretty quickly. This room was dimly lit, but not so much that you couldn't see the menus, with a fireplace to the side and what looked like yet another room in the back. The whole place just felt cozy, and given the chilly temperatures outside, was definitely a welcome respite from the cold.

We started off with the calamari and some drinks, they have an impressive selection of ciders, including many local ones with some that I have never heard of, that I want to come back and try more of. This time I went with the Lake Drum Tulsi Basil which was scrumptious, herby, refreshing, and local to Geneva. Bonus! The beer selection is even more insane, and Ang couldn't choose just one, so he enjoyed a flight of 3 different beers and a cider. The calamari was excellently crispy (I love crispy food, especially fried foods) and not at all chewy, though the breading and the squid must have been having an argument because they did not want to stay together. It was paired with both a marinara sauce as well as a spicy mayo and sprinkled with a seasoning blend. The seasonings added an extra layer of flavor with a subtle hint of heat that was really nice. You bet your boots I kept that spicy mayo and coated my fries in it, scraping the sides of the plastic ramekin to get every little drop out of it. I loved that stuff.

Entree-wise I feel like I committed a bit of a faux pas, ordering the chicken pot pie instead of something containing beef. I was a bit let down with my decision, but as soon as I saw it on the menu I started craving it bad and couldn't order anything else, sadly it wasn't what I had been hoping for. Something was missing from it, I'd say seasoning, but I added some salt and pepper, but it still wasn't up to snuff. Maybe garlic? I don't know. Anyway, It was still decent, and I would absolutely go back again because Ang's Beef stew was out of this world. It was tender and the gravy/sauce/broth/whatever it was that the beef was in was absolutely delicious. They killed it with that meal. Both meals also had a thick square of perfectly baked puff pastry on top. I kept hitting it with my spoon to hear the crackles and crunches as I broke it up and drowned it in my pot pie broth. So satisfying.
