Monday Munchies: Captains Cafe

Bacon. Sausage. Stuffed. Waffles. Those 4 little words are joyous all on their own, but marry them together and throw an over-medium egg on top and your life will be changed my friends. A chorus of angels will descend from the heavens to regale you and bathe you in soft lighting as you dig in. Wow. The Snuffalufagus (what the dish is lovingly named) came about due to a pregnancy dream that creator, and menu-curator/chef/waitress Jen just had to make into a reality. What a complete gem my dudes. What a complete gem. We originally had our eye on another breakfast spot in Geneva, but happened across a picture of one of Captain's Cafe's other waffle options (you can get a different topping on each triangle) and were sold.

Stuffed, much like the waffles, between an Aaron's furniture and a vape/CBD shop leaves little room inside for diners especially on Sunday morning with a line out the door, but is comfortable enough where you won't notice or mind. Trust me, when the first bite passes over your taste buds, you'll forget anything else in the restaurant exists unless its at your table. The restaurant is decorated with merchandise showing support for both the restaurant and the Finger Lakes region in general, beautiful wall art of the lakes, and signs with the day's specials, lovingly prepared daily by Jen, including around 8 types of homemade breads from sweet to savory. Doughnuts are hand stuffed, cinnamon rolls are topped with crumbled bacon, and cakes and cookies fill a well-lit display case- ready to go home with you or be enjoyed on site.

My boyfriend, Ang and I were staying in Belhurst Castle, which only does a cold continental breakfast, but we wanted something warm to fill our bellies. We were both so happy to find this place, that we visited Captain's Cafe again the second morning we were there. On the first day we started out by splitting one of the lemon doughnuts as an appetizer and Ang ordered a CBD coffee. He said it was so smoothe that it didn't even taste like coffee and drank it black. I begged to differ since I'm a coffee newbie, but agreed that even black it wasn't completely unpleasant (I would've still needed some vanilla creamer or something in there). If you're not sure about the coffee, but would like to give the CBD a go, they also have regular coffee that you can add CBD whipped cream to. For the entree, I ended up going with the majestic beast mentioned above, the Snuffalufagus, and as you can probably tell I am happy with the decision I made. Ang ordered the cream cheese and fluff (!!) stuffed french toast topped with peanut butter. Oh my heavens, the peanut butter got all melty and mingled with the fluff on top to make a beautiful baby. It was like eating a PB and fluff sandwich, but made with delicious pillow instead of bread. Since we both wanted some of each, we just decided to split them both to get the best of both worlds. I don't know if I've ever been happier leaving a restaurant. And that's saying a lot because a good meal always puts me in such a great mood that its hard to pin-point a favorite.

The second day, Ang went for the CBD coffee again stating "when you write about this, tell them that it tastes even less coffee-y today than it did yesterday." Although today he had to add just a touch of cream and sugar since we both opted for savory dishes. With all the sugar the day before, the coffee didn't need anything added! Food-wise he went for a corned beef hash omelette and homefries, even though he mentioned to me that he doesn't really like corned beef hash. Weird. But, he had a hunch it would be homemade and of better quality and he felt like trying it. Unsurprisingly, he was right. The corned beef hash was shredded and nowhere near resembled the canned dog food look of the hash that I'm used to seeing. I do wish I had tried it now, but at the time I was too interested in my meal to give his another thought. Also, his potatoes were not done enough for this crispy-loving gal, but he liked them. As for me, I got the most Millennial thing I could think of and went for the avocado toast, but I replaced the grilled garlic bread with their homemade cheddar, scallion, sun dried tomato bread and added hash-browned potatoes on the side. As some of you know, I'm pretty much the messiest eater on the planet. I don't mean to be, but sometimes no matter how careful I am, crumbs end up everywhere. Its my curse I tell you. But this meal? Ooooh boy was this a doozey. There was so much on the open-faced sandwich that pico pieces, bread, and even avocado were raining everywhere. I gave up by the second piece and used my fork and knife like a civilized human being. Ugh. Everything looked and tasted very fresh and that bread? It was thick and soft and had little pockets where you could tell it wasn't processed like purchased breads, but this added to the trouble in keeping ingredients on since it wasn't sturdy, worth it though because it was tasty. Let me tell you about these hash-browned potatoes. Ang, who was sitting across from me, could hear the satisfying crunch as I cut into them, and the steam from the middle rose up to greet my nose with fried potato-y goodness. The inside was soft and flaky and were some of the most perfect potatoes I've had in a while.

So, if you're in Geneva NY and want to give an off-the charts-breakfast place a try, swing on over to Captain's Cafe and get yourself something tasty. Say hi to Jen and thank her for all the delicious food you'll be enjoying as well (and eat one of those bacon-topped cinnamon rolls for me! I made the mistake of waiting to get one and they were gone by the time I was ready).
