Monday Munchies: Dumpling House

Dumpling House is located in the old Mighty Taco building on Jefferson Rd in Rochester, NY. What a mighty upgrade this was from the previous restaurant. Dumpling House had only been opened for about a month or so when we visited, so they're still pretty new, but the place was PACKED, plus what looked like online or to-go orders being picked up constantly as well. Service was on the slow side, but again the restaurant was full only a half hour after opening, for the day, and it looked like there was only one server on at the time. Being a server myself for several years, I was impressed at how she handled it, she didn't even looked stressed!

But, onto the food! My friend Sami ordered the fried Teriyaki tofu (1st picture below) for an appetizer while I ordered the pork belly buns (second picture). Sami raved about the tofu as well, the outside was crisp and the inside soft, which if you're a fan of fried tofu, you know is not always an easy task to complete. She was nervous about ordering it because this is a dish that, when done improperly, can end up soggy. Not here at Dumpling House my friends! Just look at that presentation too.Holy moley were those pork buns amazing. The outside of the pork was a little crispy with added a nice crunch to break up the pillow-y softness of the buns. And the inside of that pork? Incredibly tender! And the sauce was light and a little sweet.

For our meals, she ordered the red bean buns, steamed, while I ordered the xiao long bao (soup dumplings). First of all, those red bean buns were HUGE and had a generous portion of red bean inside. I was honestly expecting it to be mostly bun (which was soft and pillow-y again, just like for my pork belly buns) with some red bean inside, but the ratio seemed pretty on point. The xiao long bao were soup-er tasty, though I have to say, of the two dishes, I preferred the steam buns. I will say that I did not like the sauce that came with these dumplings...at all. It tasted like mostly vinegar and just was not for me. But the flavor of the soup and consistency of the dumplings was great.

There are so many things on the menu here that I wanted to try and there's sure to be something that you'll like too!! Go check out Dumpling House at 410 Jefferson rd. Just be aware that they are closed on Mondays!
