In the heart of Reykjavik you'll find an interestingly named restaurant, that will entice you to enter with the phrase "just a few more steps for you- a giant leap for your taste buds" over top of a pop art portrait made of magazine clippings. Inside, as I've stated countless times now about many of the places in Iceland, the chic decor, industrial furnishings, and modern art pieces will leave your eyes just as full as your belly. Please don't let the upscale atmosphere and creativity with the food deter you from going in to eat if you don't feel dressed the part. Lara and I went in after a day of hiking, as it was on the way back to the AirBnb and we were welcomed. The couple next to us were dressed to the nines, but the other guests seemed to be in casual and street clothes, nothing extremely fancy.
Offering a small menu, only 6 entrees available along with 2 desserts, everything on it is crafted with care and packed with flavor. As the saying goes, sometimes less is more. Although the menu is short, it already looks different than when we were there a couple weeks ago, so I'm under the impression that they switch it up often enough to keep guests coming in to try something new. The fact that they also source local ingredients from farmers ensures the freshness and also dictates the menu, most likely. The Langoustine Bisque that Lara ordered is still there and she highly recommended it, but the dish I enjoyed and the dessert we shared are gone. The dish I had consisted of a perfectly cooked medium rare filet with carrots, foamed potatoes inside of little onion cups, and some kind of heavenly sauce on top. The plating was just as gorgeous as the food was delicious! I'm a steak gal, but don't order it at restaurants typically because it never seems to be cooked the way I order it. Here, I had the feeling that the steak would be perfectly cooked and in fact, it was!
As of right now Geiri Smart is sadly, but understandably closed temporarily, until the situation with Coronavirus gets under control. You can daydream of their food and get updated information as they update it at their website, on Instagram, or through Facebook. When things go back to normal, and you find yourself in Iceland, please visit them in person and take your taste buds on their own vacation:
