After yet another let down with hours, this time with Phoebe's Restaurant and Coffeehouse, which is not opened on weekends! What the heck. I had a back up this time, and that was Peaks Coffee Company. The original plan was to go here on Sunday right before we left for home, but this actually worked out better in the long run. The space was fresh and spacious with home-y décor and lots of natural light from the floor to ceiling windows. The two employees were kind and helpful, their display was filled with all sorts of yummy-looking baked goods, and they also had a small breakfast menu.
I wound up grabbing a chamomile donut and an almond poppy seed scone to munch on later with an iced coffee and a breakfast burrito to enjoy while we sat and talked. Inside the iced coffee I got some vanilla and caramel flavoring without any cream! I thought I might need it, but the first sip was so smooth and tasty that I opted out of it. This is extraordinarily unusual for me and I think speaks to the quality of their coffee that it could stand so well on its own (I don't count flavoring...I HAVE to have flavoring because I'm a coffee baby. The flavoring was also sweetened, which eliminated the need to then add sugar as well. I just need to pause here too while we admire that burrito. Look at how toasty it is...and it was like that on both sides. I love that good crunch when I bite into something that should be toasted and is perfectly done. The cheese was gooey, bacon crispy, the veggies added nice color (and of course that health factor too), and that chipotle aioli gave it enough spice without taking away from the flavors of the burrito itself. I appreciated that it was on the side too so I could control just how much went on there and that I could enjoy bites both with and without it to compare. The scone ended up being a perfect late night snack. It was crumbly and a bit dry (which is what I expect from a scone) and the almond was well balanced in it. Not too much of it, but it wasn't exactly subtle either. I was tempted to see if I could go back and order more of them for the road the next day!
Lara snagged a chamomile donut too, which is showcased in these photos here. The glaze was a little...runnier than a typical donut glaze which we think seeped into the donut to give it this interesting texture. It was a little chewy, but light, and the chamomile flavor was very subtly floral. I think I would have liked that flavor to be a little stronger, but I'm a big fan of floral so it may be the perfect balance for someone else. I took a bite of mine fresh, because yes, I was envious of Lara's on her plate, and really enjoyed it. When I finally got around to finishing it the next morning, I found that it still held up well which donuts don't always do. I think that glaze helped keep it moist and it never ended up drying out like other donuts tend to. For her drink she got wild and ordered a matcha colada, to mix up her normal matcha latte. While she wasn't the biggest fan, she's always up for trying new things and branching out of her comfort zone. I sampled it and enjoyed the smoothness of the drink, but I'm a dope and forgot there was coconut in it so that flavor threw me off for a whole second. Once that settled I appreciated how the coconut lent well to the typical bitterness of matcha and made it a well balanced drink. Plus the color is just stunning. Is it something that I would order for myself? Nah. But if it sounds up your alley then certainly give it a go because it IS tasty.
