Sunday Suites: Maxhapan Cabanas

Finishing off week one of Belize is our stay at Maxhapan Cabanas in Caye Caulker, Belize. We were able to walk to Maxhapan from the boat that took us to Caye Caulker from Belize City, though it was a little further away than we anticipated; we were also very tired from a long bus ride and what felt like an equally long, not very smooth at all, boat ride which I think affected how far we thought it was. The rest of the time we were there, the walks from the cabanas to the main part of town didn't feel even remotely as long as it felt that arrival day.

The ground everywhere here is hard-packed sand, which gave the cabanas an extra beachy vibe. There was a lot of space around the cabanas, including a two-story palapa (photo below) made for entertaining guests. At night it sparkled with lights and had plenty of places to sit. Our cabana was a one story room with our own private porch complete with 2 chairs and a hammock. Oh my goodness that hammock!! I spent any downtime at the cabana in that thing; reading, drawing, napping, and just enjoying the pleasant breeze and sunshine. There was also another cabana that was two stories and I think it had two, maybe more, rooms in it, and am so glad ours was private.

At Maxhapan Cabanas, Dorsethea Louise makes sure you have what you need. Bikes are given to you when you stay here, just like at Jacki's Place and you can bike everywhere in Caye Caulker, its very small, with a big personality. But, more on that in a Tuesday Traveler Post coming up soon. Our room had a fridge, microwave, private bathroom, and a table and chairs. The beds here were hard and, for me, not as comfy...but after a busy day exploring or even just lounging in the sun it didn't really matter. We were always worn out anyway. Dorsethea also provided us with bottles of water in our fridge everyday during her freshening up of the place and we had AC which we really only used at night to sleep. The cabanas are far enough away from the center of the city to give you peace and quiet at night, but close enough to walk or bike wherever you wanted to go. Dorsethea was very welcoming, helpful, and friendly as well and always happy to chat when we saw her.

If you're in Caye Caulker, definitely make this your place to stay. You can find out more or make reservations at these locations:
