Sunday Suites: Omamawasi

Look how freaking cool this place in Quito is!! Ugh. As soon as I saw this on AirBnb, I knew I HAD to stay here and I was super glad I did. The only bad thing about it was the climb up the steepest freaking hill to get there. I underestimated it twice, thinking I was just tired the first time, just to figure out that I would only be taking a taxi back up from then on. Because holy moley, the altitude will destroy you if you're not ready for it. Jeez. Didn't help that I left my Altitude sickness pills at home- I was so mad about that. But all of that frustration was so worth it to say in this beautiful architectural piece of art.

This place was called Omamawasi and had a coffee shop on the property called Omama cafe, which I was unable to ever go to because it's closed on Mondays and Tuesdays...the two days I was there. Ah well. Sealed behind a wooden fortress, I had to open the large wooden gate at the bottom to even access the property. It was kind of cool. It also sort of reminds me of the pictures I've seen of Santorini in Greece with that white, blue, cream color combo and very curved architecture. Also, check out the cool stairwell up to the room! The railing just looks like a big stick. and I want to sit on those ledges! Anyway, let's take a peek at the set up of this place.

So, each room is separated into sections that each have their own doors. I have written this sentence a multitude of times, and I can't figure out how to word it well. Like, hm, each section of the room; the kitchen, bathroom, and bedroom, are separated by doors, but they don't connect. Each room just goes to the outside corridor so you have to go outside to get to any other part of the room? Does that make sense? It's a truly odd setup. So if I had to pee in the middle of the night, I'd have to go outside to get to the bathroom. Anyway! Here's the bedroom, its a little tiny but it IS bigger than the picture shows. It was cold too, I don't know for sure if there was heat, but the covers on the bed were thick, heavy and cozy and the mattress itself was ridiculously comfortable. I did NOT want to get out of that thing. Which is good because I slept a lot due to the altitude. I was just constantly tired. So I was extremely happy that this bed was such a dream.

The bathroom was the first, and I think only one during the whole month, that had a tub. If you think I didn't take a bath every goddamn night I was there, you'd be incredibly wrong. Baths are like my cure-all and I typically take one every night. They alleviate my anxiety and ease my depression and just make me so happy. But, in Ecuador tubs are not widely available in accommodations so I made do with showers for most of the time. This was a true dream for me and I truly enjoyed it. I did hate how cold the toilet was every time I went to use it, especially in the middle of the night ahahaha

The kitchen was also small, I will say that I knew all of the rooms would be small from the AirBnb description, which was really perfect for me since it would just be me staying there and I didn't originally plan to be at the AirBnb very often. It was nice to not feel so small in the space I was occupying, like I should be sharing the room with someone if that makes sense? It was perfect for a solo traveler. The kitchen was cute, had a table for two, a fridge that fit everything I needed it to, a purified water cooler, and a stove and microwave should you need it. I believe there was a coffee maker as well, but I preferred to just go to a local shop and get some.

And then look at this view from the outdoor space where the washer and dryer were as well as a table and chairs. Absolutely gorgeous, even in the gloomy weather. It was rainy and cold here, especially considering I had just come from the hot, humid islands of the Galapagos so I never really used the outdoor space. I bet it would be super great in nice weather, especially sipping on coffee in the morning or a glass of wine at night!

The host, Maria was pleasant through messages and I really only ever saw her one time, when I was checking in. The Omamawasi was far enough out of the way where it was a quiet space away from the city center, while a short drive (less than 5 minutes) into the bustling main streets. If you've been here before and were able to visit the coffee shop on the property let me know how you liked it!
