Sunday Suites: Underwater Hotels

Updated: Sep 4, 2023

I may have mentioned this once or twice before, but I love water, it is 100% my favorite element. From activities on the water, activities adjacent to water, underwater critters, enjoying the scenic views it provides, and now even getting to sleep with the fishes!! These are usually pretty pricey, given the unique experience, but there are a one or two more affordable options out there.

The first is the fully inclusive Manta Resort on Pemba Island in Tanzania and has three levels. At $1840 you get a roof that's available to be enjoyed throughout the day and at night, at your leisure. Underneath that is the landing deck, with a bathroom and lounging area. Below the landing deck you find a cozy king bed awaiting you with a 360 panorama of the surrounding water, reef, and sea life. At night spotlights come on so you can see even the shiest of creatures. You are provided with kayaks, snorkels, fins, and mobile phone loaded with hotel contacts. You also get a fundi, defined as a specialist, in this case probably a chef, as they bring your meals at times that you and the fundi predetermine. The hotel also offers excursions, diving packages, and safari packages, and a spa facility.

The second is the Conrad Maldives Rangali Island, which has no prices listed, so I can only imagine what it costs. The underwater room here has a ton of perks, so its probably worth it! An infinity pool, outdoor deck, two bedrooms, and a bathroom are above water with the master bedroom set elegantly 16 feet below the sea. The room has a 180 degree curved acrylic dome above the bed, as well as floor to ceiling windows in the bathroom and walk-in closet and a tunnel viewing theatre. Just look at that domed room! It looks like you're sleeping in one of those aquarium archways! I want to stay here so bad. To arrive you either need to get on a private seaplane or speedboat. On top of this they have a private 24 hour butler and chef on staff, spa treatments as well as a fitness trainer on call, private jet skis, junior dive courses for kids, a kids club, and babysitting provided with notice.

The last one, at the most reasonable price of $165 a night, is Hotel Utter Inn in Sweden. Designed by the artist Mikael Genberg to look like a little Swedish house in the middle of a lake. Nearby is an uninhabited island that you can canoe to with the provided boat. The water isn't as crystal clear as the others, a lake is a bit different from the open ocean after all, and you don't get many of the amenities from the previous place, but it's a cute, quaint little option. There is a port-a-potty on site, a small hot plate, and two twin beds below the water, but nothing else. Breakfast is provided and you should bring your own dinner. This cozy little place will make you feel like you own your own little island for the time you're there. And tiny houses have been so in lately, and this space is so unique, that you'll have stories to tell for sure and fun photos to share!
