The Kooky Cookie

Okay, can we just take a minute to look at and enjoy the magnificent cookies that I ordered from the Kooky Cookie?! They say you eat with your eyes first and what a lovely feast this was for them, so before even taking a bite I knew I was in for a treat. The box I purchased was for Pride Month and 10% of sales from every cookie went to the Arnett House/Center of Youth, a residence for LGBTQ and trafficked homeless youth. Deliciousness AND helping a good cause? Sign me up!

The flavors included in this box are red velvet with chocolate chips and a Nutella filling, chocolate blueberry, pistachio, lemon crinkle, carrot cake, and white chocolate chip with mixed berries. The only one not in the photo at the top is the carrot cake. I'm not a carrot cake fan, but my stepdad is, so they went directly to him and I don't think they made it long enough to see the next day! A common thing with these cookies is that each one is absolutely perfect in texture. I like my edges a bit harder than the center and I love when that center has a firm but chewy texture. Yum! Each one also had great flavor.

I was most excited for the lemon crinkle and least excited for the ones with berries. Not that I didn't think they would be good, but for me fruit pieces don't always go well in baked goods. Another issue is that if you don't put the actual fruit in and use the juice, the fruit flavor can be too subtle. Well, color me surprised because both the white chocolate with mixed berries and the blueberry cookies were actually my absolute favorites! What surprised me most with the blueberry one is that it wasn't blueberry flavored. It had chocolate covered blueberries in it! Woah. WOAH. what? Game changer. That elevated this cookie to a whole new level- instantly my favorite. The mixed berry one surprised me too, although the berries were not covered in white chocolate. Something about the texture of the berries, the tartness of the cranberries, and the sweetness of the white chocolate really made a well-balanced cookie.

As for the lemon, it had the exact opposite "problem" as the fruit ones. For lemon flavor I basically wanna be punched in the face with tart lemon-y goodness. I want my lips to pucker and then to finish on the powdered sugar to ease away the tastebud-punching effects from the lemon. These cookies are not that, which is awesome for people who enjoy a more mild lemon flavor. But of course, this doesn't mean they weren't tasty! In this cookie, the lemon shone through well, it was bright and not subtle enough that it became lost. The Kooky Cookie is very good about their flavor profiles and balancing of those flavors to make a yummy cookie that you get to taste everything that you're supposed to without being overpowered by anything.

The red velvet was probably my least favorite, though again not a bad cookie, just not the star of the box for me. The cookie was dense with Nutella stuffing, a perk for so many of you I'm sure, but just not my jam. Thankfully, each flavor came with two cookies, so I warmed up the second cookie and it was perfect! The chocolate and the Nutella got a little melty and made a big difference for me. If you are a big Nutella and red velvet fan, this will be right up your alley for sure.

Last, but not least, that freaking pistachio cookie! Look at that monster! I wasn't entirely sure what to expect, but I do love pistachios, so I figured I couldn't go wrong. Oof was I right! These cookies were bigger than the others which just meant I got to enjoy more of it. It was nutty and sweet, perfectly balanced (obviously), and reminded me of a white chocolate macadamia nut cookie...without the chocolate. The crunch of the pistachio was a nice contrast to the chewy, soft texture of the cookie and I was very sad when both were gone.

At the time of writing this (6/23/2021), only these pride cookies are available and can be purchased in the box or individually. I will certainly be keeping my eyes on The Kooky Cookie's social media to see what kind of kooky concoctions they come up with next! If you're a local in Rochester, NY I highly recommend supporting this woman-owned small business that's producing BIG flavors!
