For this week's Womxn Crush Wednesday, I chose the creator of Crossing Borders herself- Becki!! Hey, that's me! I'm a budding film/tv show creator with a degree in film and animation under my belt and an exciting career ready and waiting in front of me that I've been working hard to achieve. But what else is there to me?
My original goal was actually not to work in film, I was VERY concentrated on the animation part of my degree, with the goal of having a children's show that taught Japanese on a network like Nick Jr, Disney Jr, or PBS kids. After graduating in 2011 I worked at Animatus, an animation studio here in Rochester, where I gained more experience editing in Final Cut and Premiere, animating in all different styles, leading an animation team on two larger projects, and working with kiddos during the animation workshops. I also worked at a film workshop directed towards kids and teens for a summer where, as a counselor, I helped them go from idea to finished film.
After that summer I moved to California where...I had no luck finding a job in the animation field and was not only struggling with my depression, but also with intense homesickness for the first time in my life. After about a year I moved back home, and did not draw again for about 4 years or so. It really killed my passion, interest, and love of creating for a while.
But now, I love to create in...just about every sense of the word. Whether it be drawing, baking, writing, painting, filming, editing, scrapbooking, crafting, rehabbing furniture, or anything else in between! I also enjoy studying languages, having a basic knowledge of Spanish and ASL, and I used to be conversationally fluent in Japanese but have since lost it due to lack of practice. Now, I'm currently working on learning the basics in Korean, Thai, Hindi, French, Turkish, Greek, and Icelandic- the first 6 being for the show and the latter being just for fun. That way I can at least communicate somewhat in whatever country we're in. It is also a great way to have a little bit of an introduction to the culture while still staying in your home.
And, clearly, I love to travel. So far I have been to almost all 50 states, Canada, Japan, Grenada, Belize, Ireland, and Iceland! It all started with my trip to California at 16, and then going every year after that for many years. I wanted to go anywhere I could! When I went to Japan back in 2009, life as I knew it was over- I was officially bitten by the travel bug. The rest from there is history!
I would love to know more about all of you awesome people too! Introduce yourself in the comments below :)
